Finca Fantastica Travel for the independent traveller

In 2001 I did the wildest thing I`ve ever
done in my life! I sold my house in Denmark
and moved 3.000 kilometers away to a little
Spanish village in Southern Spain where I
had never been before - and without
knowing how I was going to make a living
when I got there.
That`s a life changing experience!
Torrox is just a 45 minutes drive east from Malaga airport. A taxi is
about € 60, but you might as well rent a car.
Torrox is divided into 4 areas. You have Torrox Pueblo, the old
Moorish part, Torrox Costa by the sea, Torrox Park between the
pueblo and the sea and finally Torrox Campo, in the surrounding
mountains, where you will be staying if you rent a villa with pool.
The Campo is a bit "Wild West". To reach the majority of rental villas,
you have to drive off the beaten track along unsurfaced mountain
roads where you’ll get a real away-from-it-all feeling. When you take
in the stunning views from your villa it will make the journey entirely
worthwhile.
Torrox Pueblo has recently opened the first hotel in the narrow
cobble- stoned street of Calle Baja - in the old part of the village.
Torrox Costa has a huge Hotel , Riu Ferrara, and this is the
departure point for tours in the area.
Torrox Costa has an impressive promenade lined with restaurants,
pavement cafés and bars. During summer the promenade has night
market every night from about 9 - 10 o clock. With 9km of coastline,
Torrox is home to a long straight beach and also boasts one of the
best climate in Europe. A typical evening here is spent strolling from
bar to bar, sampling the region’s food and selection of wines.
Well with a little insight knowledge there are other ways to spend
the night. On Monday nights starting about ninish there is jam-
session at Casa Maria in an old garage between Torrox Park and
Torrox Costa. If you like live music, Blues, Rock & Roll and whatever is
going down that night - because you never know who shows up and
grab the microphone - This is the place to be and the drinks come a
lot cheaper than they do in the bars at Costa. The age group stretch
wide - litterally from twenty to late sixties and the variety of
nationalities are very mixed. How to get there is impossible to explain
- you will simply have to take a taxi or ask somebody to show you -
but you are very welcome.
Have a look at this video from a Jam Session at Casa Maria
There is a world outside of Torrox which you can explore by car and
the possibilities of tours are endless. Very close to Torrox we can
recommend to visit Acebuchal and Frigiliana and not to missed Nerja
Caves. A good investment is a guide book for Andalucia from either
amazone.co.uk or amazone.com
The heart of the village is without doubt the Plaza. That is where you
go for tapas and drinks under the orange trees during the day - or for
paella or fried fish at Paco`s bar at night.
Arriving in the village around midnight on a Saturday night in May -
many moons ago, - the taxi stopped approximately 100 meters from
our rented Moorish town house because most "roads" in the village
are too narrow, steep and winding to drive - they are only accessible
by foot or scooters (the Plague of Andalucia). However - in spite of 4
suitcases, a doped cat, a halfway sleeping teenager - my almost 70
years old parents and I managed to climb the steep concrete path to
our new casa and our new life.
